The 1947 Sugar Bowl was played on January 1, 1947, between the third-ranked Georgia Bulldogs and the ninth-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels. Georgia won the game 20–10 to complete a perfect 12–0 season.North Carolina scored the only touchdown of the first half on a four-yard run by Walt Pupa to take a 7–0 lead. Georgia tied the game in the third quarter on a four-yard run by John Rauch. North Carolina took the lead back on a 27-yard field goal by Bill Fox, but Georgia scored the next 13 points to win the game.
Georgia took the lead for good on a 67-yard touchdown pass from Charley Trippi to Dan Edwards. In the fourth quarter, Rauch scored on a 13-yard touchdown run to seal the victory.
Trippi was named the game's Most Valuable Player after throwing for 129 yards and a touchdown and running for 65 yards. Edwards had three catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.
The Georgia Bulldogs' victory in the 1947 Sugar Bowl was their first bowl win in school history. It was also the first time that the Bulldogs had finished a season undefeated.
